This course takes you on a journey through the essentials of business strategies, starting from a meta level with the vision and mission of a company/organization. We will look into how the mission is translated into overarching and specific objectives and the role of business strategy as the framework and driving force of the ways to achieve them.
The importance of efficient business structures and strategic management thinking will be highlighted and lead us further into the wide variety of substrategies (marketing, innovation, finance etc.), including recent or upcoming trends.
We will zoom in on how to balance a growth strategy with corporate responsability, sustainability and HR topics such as wellbeing and D&I.
Particular attention is paid to strategic management and planning processes as well as to the difference between strategic management and operational management.
Last but not least, the implementation of strategies is illustrated with a few success cases and cases of failure (from which lessons can be drawn too).
Toelichting onderwijstaal
The course takes place in English and the materials provided are also in English because students will likely find themselves in an internationally oriented professional environment where English is the working language. However, students are allowed to ask questions in Dutch during tests, tasks and the exam.

The course consists partly of lectures in order to provide a theoretical basis. This will be complemented with relevant case studies and individual or group tasks to be performed. Blocks of 2 class hours often consist of a combination of the aforementioned forms of work.
The study load is as follows: 3 SP gives 60 to 75 hours of study load.
12 weeks of 2 hours: 24 hours.
Tasks during the year including research work on trends in the business world (3 hours), reading casi and solving questions to prepare for group discussions (20 hours), and content tests (7 hours), totalling 30 hours.
Preparation for oral exam with written preparation = 18 hours.
Total study load: 72 hours.

Opdrachten en op Toledo en tevens medewerking in de klas via interactie, deelname aan voorbereide discussies & casusbeprekingen (25 punten staan op permanente evaluatie waarvan 10 mondeling en 15 schriftelijk).
35 punten staan op een mondeling examen met schriftelijke voorbereiding.
Studenten moeten tijdens de opdrachten de inhoud van de cursus kunnen toepassen op concrete cases en op bedrijven.
Beleid inzake AI, documentauthenticiteit en fraude: ChatGPT of andere AI-tools kunnen dienen ter ondersteuning van opdrachten. Wanneer je deze gebruikt, vermeld je dit ook in je bronnen/inleiding. Wanneer je dit niet doet, krijg je een NA-score of onvoldoende. Je toont ook aan dat je kritisch met deze tools kan omgaan.
Wanneer de docent vermeldt dat je bij opdrachten, testen (permanente evaluatie ) en/of examens geen AI-tools mag gebruiken en je doet dit toch, - dan wordt dit uiteraard als fraude beschouwd. Meer info over het Odisee brede AI beleid vind je op deze link.
Wat moet je doen bij afwezigheid i.v.m. taken / testen / presentaties ?
