Competency 1: From the perspective of this own area of specialization, the graduate can support the company policy efficiently

1.1 On the basis of an analysis of the business processes, can provide advice that takes into account business functions, business strategy, corporate culture, and the environment in order to optimize short and long term management decisions.  (starter)

1.3 Interprets financial ratios, costing and the annual accounts and provides advice in order to prepare short and long term management decisions (starter)

Competency  3: Can support and manage internal and external oral and written communications in at least three languages

3.2 writes reports and  words a message, a personal opinion or point of view, integrating business information and numerical data. (starter)

THIS COURSE

  • focuses on office productivity and general notion of value of digital in business life, with a focus on the topics below; and
  • belongs to the learning track 'information management'.

GENERAL CONTENT (more detailed information is available on Toledo):

1. Document processing (MS Word):

E.g.

  • formatting (character, paragraph, layout, tabs, tables, lists, ...)
  • build-in styles, text edits and themes
  • graphic elements (e.g. pictures)
  • formal elements (header, footer, page, ...)
  • sections,
  • lists/reviews,
  • inserting various kinds of content (tables, cross-references, header/footer, etc.),
  • reference and research tools
  • ...

2. Data analysis and reporting (MS Excel):

E.g.

  • basic calculations
  • cell references (absolute, relative, mixed),
  • formulas and functions (logical, date/time, querry, rounding up/off, etc.),
  • charts,

  • pivoting tables and charts,

The following items will not be evaluated in this course, yet can still be part of class content.

3. Presentation skills (MS PowerPoint)

Assignments

An active participation during the courses is expected. Students need to prepare assignments in and in between courses.

The solutions will be discussed during the courses, based on the questions of the students.

Classes take place in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) classrooms, so please bring your personal laptop for practice purposes!

A. COURSE EVALUATION PRINCIPLES

A.1. POINT DISTRIBUTION FOR THE COURSE

  • Word: 20 points (midterm only), weight of 25% of total course grade
  • Excel: 60 points (January exam only), weight of 75% of total course grade

= total for the course: 80 points (i.e. 100% of total course grade)

A.2. MODES OF ASSESSMENT

Written midterm during the November midterm examination period: 20 points out of 80 in total to be earned

  • Word (all 20 points)

Written exam during the January examination period: the remaining 60 points out of 80 in total to be earned

  • Excel (all 60 points)

A.3 IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • It is compulsory that you pass the Excel portion of ICT skills to pass the course. If you do not pass the Excel section, the other section (i.e. Word) will NOT be taken into account, hence your maximum score will only be 7/20.
  • Most of the points for this course will be earned through practical assignments, meaning working on a document / data set / presentation which needs to be uploaded within the exam time when finalized
  • Possible other midterm/exam style questions: (mainly) multiple-choice questions, closed-ended questions and open questions.

  • Groupwork with "Peer grading": all evaluation activities that contain group work, will apply "peer grading" (captured via formalized process), to differentiate individual score vs. group average, based on collected peer feedback.
  • Assignment submission. All assignments will have to be submitted on Toledo / TurnItin. Emailed assignments will NOT be graded.

  • AI & document authenticity Policy: You need to submit authentic, original work for your course assignments, presentations and open book exams (a.o. no copy/paste from AI tools). Deviation from this policy is only possible if the course lecturer explicitly allows use of AI-tools via TOLEDO/Ultra announcement or in course material or assignment instructions.
