This course provides a one semester introduction to accounting on the one hand (collecting, analysing and communicating financial information to permit informed judgement and decisions by users of the information) and finance on the other (how businesses raise funds from investors and use these funds to make investments to create weatlh). Within accounting a clear distinction is made between financial accounting (for external users, other than the managers of the business) and management accounting (for internal purpose, i.e. the managers of the business).

Along with the mandatory (e)textbook comes an online learning platform, named MyLab Accounting. Assignments are due through this platform on a weekly basis and worth a considerable percentage of the total grade for this course (cf. Evaluation section for details).

Classes take place in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) classrooms, so please bring your personal laptop for practice purposes!

A. COURSE EVALUATION PRINCIPLES

Course assessment is an examination worth 60% (midterm exam possible) plus permanent evaluation (weekly assignments through MyLab) worth 40%.

A.1. THE EXAM (WORTH 60% OF THE COURSE)

  • is a combination of multiple choice, multiple answer, fill in the blank and matching questions (open questions are also possible); and
  • is an online, on campus exam

A.2. PERMANENT EVALUATION (WORTH 40% OF THE COURSE)

  • is an excellent way to prepare for the final exam (and if necessary the retake); and
  • will only be taken into account when the student scored at least 40% (8/20) on the exam.
