Radiation protection (B-ODISEE-OWA02E)
Aims
Course-specific learning outcomes
- Uses scientific knowledge and understanding of systems and applications of the agro and biotechnology sectors to address complex, sector-specific challenges, including in a non-trusted context.
- Detects a problem within a delineated framework and formulates an appropriate problem statement
- Performs practical work within the agro and biotechnology sectors in a quality and safe manner.
Previous knowledge
A. Previously required courses
The general admission requirements and the order of enrolment are to be found in the Education and Examination regulations.
B. Required competences
The student masters the skills as taught on a secondary education level.
Is included in these courses of study
Activities
3 ects. Radiation protection (B-ODISEE-OWA02n)
Content
The following topics (in accordance with Art. 9 § 2 - Art. 14 as described in the RD Veterinary Exposures 09/02/2020) are covered in this course unit:
1. The methods and techniques used;
2. The health effects of exposure to ionising radiation;
3. The practical radiation protection including the physical bases;
4. The legislation and regulations on radiation protection;
5. The methods for measuring radiation;
6. The quality assurance and control.
Introduction to radiation physics (radiation, sources, dosimetry, ...)
Introduction technology, parameters on devices (creation of images, image parameters, image quality, the impact of setting parameters, ...)
Radiobiology (risks of radiation and radiation legislation)
Introduction to radiation safety (basic principles of radiation safety, justification, ALARA, dose limits. This with special focus on animal technicians and attendants)
Radiology in veterinary medicine, research (examination techniques for small and large animals, etc.)
Legislation and regulations on the practice of veterinary medicine (28 August 1991) and the protection and welfare of animals (14 August 1986)
Advanced technology such as CT scan, ultrasound, MRI, ... (introduction to complex techniques, examination techniques focused on assisting, on safety aspects, ...)
Quality assurance and legislation (quality thinking from image quality to customer satisfaction, ...)
X-ray machine handling exercises (handling the X-ray machine: movements, detector, distance, etc.)
Exercises on dosimetry and safety (shielding, distance, dosimetry, influence of parameters, etc.)
Veterinary practice (tips & tricks with fixed and mobile X-ray machines, process sequence examination, ...)
Low cost quality control on an X-ray machine

Course material
Study materials will be made available on Toledo.
Language of instruction: more information
The course is taught in Dutch.
Format: more information
Assignments - Collaborative (professional) learning - Digital learning - Simulation - Supported home-study
Digital teaching methods in which theory is explained through presentations, supported by multimedia. Processing the study material takes a minimum of 10h, and is done independently and via non-binding online coaching.
The completion of the online theory will be followed by two days live attendance at Campus Brussels-Terranova with a total of minimum 8h of practice + on-campus theory of 6h (2 days from 9 - 12h and 13 - 17h). These days will be organised in late April - early May, but the exact dates will be communicated via Toledo.
Day students (CAM) and distance students (HAO): attendance during the organised practicals is mandatory.
Evaluation
(B-ODISEE-O73357)
Explanation
Assessment | Grading scale |
---|---|
TOTAL | Pass / Fail |
For all students, the theoretical understanding is tested by means of a theory test (with open and closed questions) after each course subject. Evaluation is carried out using the pass/fail system. To pass this OPO, a 'pass' must be obtained on each theme.
Continuous evaluation of attendance, skill, commitment and attitude according to a pass/fail system during the practicals. To pass this OPO, a 'pass' must be obtained on the practicals. Presence during practical sessions is obligatory for all students.
In case of not passing, or absence from one or more days of practica, no credit can be obtained for this OPO.
Determining final score
Theory part: to pass this OPO, a 'pass' must be obtained on each theme.
Practical part: in order to pass this OPO, a pass must be obtained for the practical part.
If a fail is obtained for one and/or both parts (theory and practice), the student cannot pass this OPO.
Special points of attention
Obtaining a credit certificate for meeting the elements required by the RD Veterinary Exposures of 9 February 2020 (Art. 9 § 2 - Art. 14) in the training of persons actively involved with ionising radiation, is only possible if the student obtains the credit for the OPO "Radiation Protection".
The information presented here regarding course organisation and evaluation modalities may change at any time in function of the epidemiological reality. All changes will be communicated through Toledo, where the correct and applicable information will always be mentioned.
Information about retaking exams
The organised practica cannot be retaken or made up for the second examination opportunity.
The theoretical part can be retaken, under the same format and according to the same requirements as during the first evaluation.
The pass/fail calculation for the final total at the re-examination is the same as during the first evaluation.
