B. Required competences
The student is familiar with the basics of organic and inorganic chemistry and of microbiology. The student is also familiar with the basics of cytology.
A student can only obtain credits for this course when (s)he has previously obtained the necessary credits for the courses of general chemistry (1A and 1B), organic chemistry (1A and 1B) and biology (1A and 1B) or when (s)he can prove that these credits or competences have been obtained elswhere

Biotechnology and detection of polluting agents and specific organisms:
- detection by means of nucleic acid hybridisation (and applications)
- detection by means of immuno-assays (and applications)
- basics of recombinant DNA technology
Biotechnology and remediation of pollution:
- methane production (from organic waste)
- DRANCO
- bioethanol
- biodiesel
Biotechnology and prevention of pollution:
- bioplastics
- development of transgenic plants with beneficial effects on the environment
