The basis of a sustainable garden design, landscaping and garden maintenance is always good plant knowledge. A professional should keep his plant knowledge up to date. The students learn to identify plants with a field guide and learn the characteristics of the most important plant families. Also location characteristics and habitat are discussed.Furthermore, a concise overview is given of the law in the garden. Pruning techniques are discussed theoretically. A large part of the course describes the different plant groups: the main garden trees and city trees, common ornamental shrubs and solitary shrubs. And you learn to draw up a planting plan.

The information presented here regarding the organization of classes and evaluation modalities may change at any time in response to the epidemiological reality. All changes will be communicated via Toledo, stating the correct information which should be applied (at all times).

You can consult the compulsary course material here.

The course will be taught in Dutch.

Distance education: monitored self study. Bachelor Degree students via Distance Education take no lectures or practical courses, but will receive the study material and study guide and will be in contact with their fellow students (distance learning platforms). Student counselling sessions during the semester will allow you to ask questions about the theory. The species knowledge exam is divided into 3 parts and evaluated via MS Teams (3 evenings on a date to be agreed).

Description

The evaluation of this course consists of several parts: a design, a presentation, species exam (3 parts with each- pass/fail), practical exam and a digital exam.

The student must pass the species exam and must obtain at least 8/20 on the permanent evaluation (design and presentation), the practical exam and the digital exam in order to pass the entire course. The 3 species exams are a pass-fail system: the student does not get a point, but a passed or failed (for this part). For each of the 3 separate species exams the student must answer 50 % of the questions correctly to succeed for this part. The practical exam for CAM-students is taken at the end of the semester on the morphology of plants, knowledge of plant families and the identification of plants with a field guide, for this practical exam there is no resit.

The endpoint for the evaluation of this course is then based on the final point of the permanent evaluation (design and presentation), the practical exam and the digital exam, if this is equal to or higher than 8/20.
If the student achieves a score higher or equal to 10/20 on the permanent evaluation and on the digital exam, but does not pass his/her species exam, the total point will be reduced to a 7/20. For the resit the student will only have to take the species exam again, the result of the permanent evaluation and the digital exam will be retained (note: this does not apply to re-enrollment for this course in the next academic year).
If the student does not pass the species exam, nor the permanent evaluation, nor the digital exam, the 3 parts must be taken again.
If the student does not pass the species exam, nor the permanent evaluation, but does pass the digital exam, then the species exam and the permanent evaluation must be taken again.
If the student does not pass the species exam, nor the digital exam, but does pass the permanent evaluation, then the species exam and the digital exam must be taken again.
If the student does pass the species exam but not the permanent evaluation and not the digital exam, then only the permanent evaluation and the digital exam have to be taken again (note: this does not apply to re-enrollment for this course in the next academic year. ).
If the student does pass the species exam and the digital exam, but does not pass the permanent evaluation, then only the permanent evaluation must be taken again (note: this does not apply to re-enrollment for this course in the next academic year).
If the student does pass the species exam and the permanent evaluation but does not pass the digital exam, then only the digital exam must be taken again.

The assignment (s) of assignments and modalities and deadlines for the assignments are made available via Toledo.

The method of calculating the endpoint is made available via Toledo.

If not all assignments are submitted in time, the student can not pass.

The student provides his/her own laptop.

Distance Learning: the digital exam can be taken at 9 a.m. or at 6 p.m. There is no separate practical exam. The species knowledge exam is divided into 3 parts and evaluated via MS Teams (in the evening on a date to be agreed).

Ratings of the assignments are transferred on condition that a score of at least 50 % was achieved. Otherwise the assignments have to be redone.

There is no resit for the practical exam.
