In the course we discuss ten core themes from economic theory (micro and macroeconomics), each of which is linked to current events:

  • Consumers
  • Producers
  • Pricing
  • Macroeconomic variables
  • Economic cycle, growth and development
  • National income and employment
  • Money, monetary policy and inflation
  • International relations
  • Environment and sustainable development
  • Government

Study material (book) can be consulted here.

We work with the book Economie Vandaag (Ivan De Cnuydt, Sonia De Velder) (preferably the most recent version - contact your teacher if you don't have the most recent version).

Presentations, additional information and documents to assist in studying the course are available on the electronic platform Toledo.

Course is taught in Dutch.

Assignments - Collaborative (professional) learning

1. Lectures

  • On campus theory classes with integrated exercises

2. Project work

  • Project work in the form of a group work in which students work on their pop-up business case under the guidance of the teacher
  • The group work is issued at the end of the semester as a portfolio, which is then presented
  • All further information can be found on Toledo

Distance education: monitored self study. Bachelor Degree students via Distance Education take no lectures en do not work on project work (pop-up business case), but will receive the study material and will be in contact with their fellow students (distance learning platforms). A detailed pop-up business case will be available on Toledo. Student counselling sessions (evening sessions) during the semester will allow you to ask questions about the theory.

The information presented here regarding the organization of classes may change at any time in response to the epidemiological reality. All changes will be communicated via Toledo, stating the correct information which should be applied (at all times).

Evaluation

(B-ODISEE-H72998)

Type : Partial or continuous assessment with (final) exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Written, Presentation, Self assessment/Peer assessment
Type of questions : Multiple choice, Closed questions, Open questions
Learning material : Calculator

AssessmentGrading scale
TOTAL1-20/20 scale

The final grade will be calculated as the weighted average of the different evaluations:

  • The project work will be developed as a group work (pop-up business case) and will be evaluated as continuous assessment (8 out of 20 points) (further details are available on Toledo).
  • The remaining 12 points can be earned on the exam. The exam will be a written exam with open questions, multiple choice questions, calculations... (further details are available on Toledo).
  • In order to pass for this course, a student must score at least 8/20 on both partial evaluations (the exam and the business case assessment). In case the student scores 7/20 or less, the overall grade for this course will be reduced to this score (except when the arithmetic average of both partial evaluations is lower).

Distance Learning: Bachelor Degree students via Distance Education just take the theoretical exam (20 points). The exams are written exams and are normally planned on weekday evenings. Here as well the exam will be a written exam with open questions, multiple choice questions, calculations... (further details are available on Toledo).

At the start of the course a document with detailed information on the project work and examination will be available on Toledo.

The information presented here regarding evaluation modalities may change at any time in response to the epidemiological reality. All changes will be communicated via Toledo, stating the correct information which should be applied (at all times).

The assignments of the first exam period are retained and the points are copied. If the student did not pass the group work, an (possibly individual) task can be done in the retake. Otherwise the modalities are the same as in the first exam session (for details: see Toledo).

Distance education: same modality as in the first exam session
